The boat sails through Qutang Gorge's mouth,
Where wind roars loud in both my ears.
The endless Yangtze River flows south,
A thousand miles into my tiny gourd it pours.
The gorge's gate is a stone door,
Where angry waters fiercely roar.
My skiff amid the current falls,
A single leaf the vastness hauls.
Breathing with waves that dash and flee,
No longer guided by long pole, we're free.
I steer the helm through whirlpools deep,
And fear the jagged rocks in sleep.
Two mountains press as if to fight,
Leaving no passage for a boat so light.
As we draw near, an entrance shows,
Where White Salt Peak most lofty grows.
Trees and grass grow upside down,
Black apes wail with a mournful sound.
White clouds coil like long sleeves in air,
Scattering like feathers light and fair.
I think of years when floods held sway,
And Emperor Yao in dismay grew gray.
Yu and Yi cut through Min's stream,
And fought with mountain ghosts, a frequent theme.
They toppled ridges, moved great stones,
And carved out channels for flood's moans.
The towering mountains in the way,
Were severed, head and tail, that day.
Sheer cliffs below show not a toe,
Peaks severed at the waist in row.
Where broken, not a blade of grass,
Nor bird's nest hangs, alas, alas.
Water monsters not all slain,
Below dwell dragon and turtle in domain.
Remote, a thousand years have passed,
Since Yu died, his traces hold fast.
Must we see Yellow River's bend?
To cut this gorge was toil without end.
