如果有人身處饑寒,

撤去宴席傾聽苦辛,
坐臥身心都不得安寧。
以誠心回應他人所求,
用盡家財也還覺得輕微。
供給衣食有親疏之別,
只恐逾越了禮法綱常。
我如今願意求取教益,
豈敢妄自成爲您的朋友。
有幸您能弘揚純樸的風尚,
永遠作爲後來者的典範。
The foolish confuse evil and right,
It is precious to walk the even Way.
The gentleman embraces benevolence and righteousness,
And does not fear heaven and earth collapsing.
Thrice I received my lord's summons,
Before leaving Xianyang city.
My hesitation was not from self-importance,
But to make evident the quest for worthy fame.
Since coming to handle military documents,
I have never failed in ministerial sincerity.
Why must one grasp a white blade,
To begin bringing peace within the seas?
I serve respectfully all people under heaven,
More than I respect high ministers and dukes.
Seeing evil is like my own disgrace,
Hearing of good is like my own glory.
If some person suffers hunger and cold,
I present their inner feelings upon advancing or retiring.
I end banquets to listen to hardship and bitterness,
Sitting or lying, my body finds no peace.
Responding with my heart to what is sought,
Exhausting my family's wealth is still considered light.
In clothing and food, there are close and distant relations,
But I only fear overstepping the bounds of ritual.
Now I wish to seek improvement,
How dare I presume to be your friend?
I am fortunate you promote the pure ethos,
To be forever a model for those to come.
