People say the hundred-tongued bird is clever,
Yet when summer arrives, it falls silent.
Not as good as the dove, though deemed clumsy,
Who knows the shifts of weather through all seasons.
The wine-bird urges me to drink,
But if I get drunk, who will sober me up?
The cuckoo's call alone is worth heeding,
It tells me I should return to plough the fields early.
