In the east of the river, fruits abound,
Among them, the olive is rare and renowned.
When northerners approach it with wine in hand,
They first knit their brows before they understand.
Its skin and pit are bitter, its taste is rough,
Once tasted, it's cast aside, deemed not enough.
Yet after a while, a sweet aftertaste grows,
And then its honeyed sweetness one truly knows.
What can I compare this to, in my mind's eye?
To the words of loyal ministers, I reply.
Their honest counsel grates on the ruler's ear,
They're banished to the edge of the world, far and drear.
In times of chaos, we recall what they said,
But regret comes too late, like biting one's own head.
So I tell those who gather songs far and near:
Do not dismiss this olive poem—hold it dear.
