In middle age, I erred in learning the Way; how then did white whiskers grow?
An old friend points at me and laughs, saying I've heard the Way but cannot walk it.
I smile and thank my old friend, with vague assent and silent denial.
Laozi, master of the ancient Way, had white hair from birth.
The Buddha told King Prasenajit, 'You have that which does not turn white.'
The keeper of the pavilion, how often does he chase after guests?
When guests leave, there's no need to stay; the master remains, the pavilion stands.
Plastering walls, propping broken beams—it lies with me, not you.
When the Way is achieved, I'll knock at the Jade Dawn, kneeling to beg for the five-colored pill.
Liver and heart transform into gold; what worth have teeth and hair to mention?
