What joy does Happy Suburb hold?
The joy is in following you, sir, to roam.
For three days you did not appear,
The people's brows were knit with gloom.
But at the sound of your carriage and horse,
Your followers gather like clouds afloat.
I ask the people of Yunzhou,
"Are you not losing your livelihood?"
They say, "Only when our work is secure,
Can we then enjoy our rest and leisure."
What does Happy Suburb possess?
Why not consult your poems, sir, for this?
There is a mountain to its east,
A river winds from distant lands.
A terrace overlooks the view,
A pond invites one to amuse.
Looking up and down, one loses all sense of direction,
Vermilion railings reflect in the clear pool.
Plants and trees are not of one kind,
Green and red change with the four seasons.
Though other things are trivial,
Each finds its proper place and role.
Why is Happy Suburb so named?
I trace the meaning to its source.
Since ancient times, the wise and virtuous,
Leave legacies beyond their age.
Traces left by chance in their time,
Are not discarded by those who come.
Yunzhou is not where you long stay,
When you depart, on whom will the people rely?
This pavilion you have ascended,
This tree under which you have rested.
Let the people think of you for a hundred years,
Not merely seek a day's drunken cheer.
