All roads are open and free to roam,
Yet poverty binds my feet as I walk home.
Whose scion is that in his light fur so fine,
With a fortune to stake on a throw of the dice?
The road to Shu holds no terror for me,
Nor the treacherous paths of Taihang's peaks.
But on level ground, without a single coin,
Each step brings the chasm and ditch too near.
