The cuckoo sings as the sun ascends the sky,
The nightjar calls when the moon begins to die.
Moved by the same breath of nature's unseen hand,
They know not why they sing across the land.
The plough arrives late, yet in due season's hour,
Just when the fields demand the farmer's power.
Strong men go forth beneath the stars' pale light,
Who dares to slacken in the toil of night?
The singer's cry becomes a timely warning,
And those who hear may ponder until morning.
Thus we know those who miss their season's call
Can only chatter, achieving nothing at all.
The hundred-tongued bird, too, could speak with art,
But now its silence plays a wiser part.
I write this ode to birds of timely voice,
To follow the old songs of Bin, by choice.
