遠遠望去，瀑布如同紛垂的珠串纓絡；
近處觀看，水聲轟鳴仿佛雷霆轉動。
人們都說這水流景象奇特非凡，
它的用意是要讓行路之人驚駭。
他人驚駭，我又能得到什麼呢？
這定然不是水流本身的情意。
水又哪裡會有什麼情感呢？
它只是憑藉外物來賦予自己形態。
身處高位，趨勢就必然向下奔流，
它哪裡是樂於同岩石爭競呢？
韓愈（退之）也是個氣量狹小之人，
勉強發出不平的鳴響（指《送孟東野序》）。
自古以來那些賢能通達之士，
最初也都願意親身從事耕作。
但或因意氣感發，或因機遇觸動，
偶然間便成就了功業與聲名。

From afar, a string of pearls hangs in a misty screen;
Up close, it thunders down, a lightning-shattered scene.
People say the waterfall is wondrous to behold,
Its intent is to startle travelers, so I'm told.
Why should I be startled? What do I stand to gain?
Surely this is not the water's true feeling or aim.
What feelings could the water possibly possess?
It merely takes the shape its circumstances express.
From on high, its force descends, pulled by gravity's call,
Does it delight in battling the rocks at all?
Even Han Yu was narrow-minded, I must confess,
Forcing words of grievance, his discontent to express.
Since ancient times, the wise and accomplished, every one,
Initially wished for a life of ploughing under the sun.
But stirred by passion or by circumstance, they'd engage,
And by chance, they'd achieve success and leave their page.
