君子非好異,本意亦從眾。

君子並非喜好標新立異;
他的本意也是隨從大眾。
但居然被自己所愧對的事情逼迫,
難以再趨向於眾人的喧鬧。
孟軻遇見齊宣王時,
難道不是想要被任用嗎?
用萬鍾俸祿供養弟子,
卻似乎是以利益來驅動。
正因為他懂得辭受的原則,
其道統才被百世尊崇。
這難道只是聖賢的特質嗎?
學者本應共同遵循。
A noble man does not crave to be odd;
His original intent is to follow the crowd.
Yet, forced by what he feels ashamed of,
He finds it hard to join the common din.
When Mencius met the King of Qi,
Was it not that he wished to be employed?
With ample stipends to nourish disciples,
It seemed as if moved by material gain.
Only because he knew when to accept or decline,
His Way is honored for a hundred generations.
Is this true only for sages and worthies?
It is what all scholars should uphold.
