郊野的居所離集市很遠，
豬肉羊肉很少進入我的膳食。
既然已經養了一群雞鴨，
又因魚蟹價格低廉而獲利。
肆意殘害生命並非我心所安，
何況親眼見到宰殺鮮活的生命。
怎能從事屠宰的行業，
只為給客人準備美味的菜餚？
我剩下的年歲還能有多少，
度過的日子如同露水和閃電般短暫。
難道園中沒有蔬菜嗎，
（我願）恭敬地奉上，作為君子的宴席。

My country home is far away from the town's strife;
Rarely do pork or mutton grace my humble board.
I keep a flock of chickens and ducks in my life,
And also profit from cheap fish and crab's afford.
Such reckless waste of life can never set my mind at ease,
Let alone slaughtering fresh kills before my very eyes.
How could I bear the butcher's trade, to slaughter and displease,
Just to prepare fine dishes for my guests as their prize?
How many years are left for me in this fleeting span?
Each passing day is like the dew or lightning's flash.
Is there no vegetable grown within my garden's plan,
To reverently serve at a gentleman's repast?
