This teacup I've had for a long time,
The inkstone is before me day by day.
One morning they suddenly fell to the ground,
Their substance damaged, no longer whole.
Attached with glue and lacquer,
Put to use again is even more pitiable.
The cup can still be used for drinking,
The inkstone does not cease grinding ink.
Had they shattered completely,
It too should be ascribed to Heaven's will.
To be troubled in heart is not permissible—
Such things are not worth discarding.
