蛙鳴尚且被認為勝過鼓吹樂,
牛叫還能用黃鐘律來比擬。
'絲不如竹'也不過是隨意說說,
全賴這七竅(風琴孔)都玲瓏動聽。
幽居之人庭院靜寂,新涼滋生,
八面來風不問方向,縱橫馳騁。
六尺短竹蓆上午睡充足,
彷彿有神靈來傳授《廣陵散》的琴音。
Yuanming's lute had no strings at all,
Yet Bai Juyi loved to hear others play.
Not as good as the tunes in the air, the wind's call,
Coming and going with the breeze, sounds fade away.
Neither Gong nor Shang, just listen as you may,
Out of tune with the pitch pipes, yet no flaw to find.
Loud as a horn's note reaching a lonely town's way,
Fine as an earthworm's hole or a buzzing fly's whine.
Like the clear round cry of a crane at Huating at night,
Or the trembling long drawl of a cold cicada's plight.
One might doubt a phoenix beak calls to the sky's height,
Or fear immortal pendants walk in clouds' flight.
If it seemed a tune with no variation's art,
How could it flow so freely, refreshing the heart?
Frog clamor is still thought better than drum and fife,
An ox's low is likened to Huangzhong in life.
'Strings are not as good as bamboo' is but a phrase,
Relying on these seven holes, so clear and bright.
In the quiet courtyard of a recluse, coolness grows,
The eight winds come and go, no matter where they blow.
On a six-foot short mat, a noon nap fully bestowed,
As if spirits came to transmit Guangling's ancient echoes.
