Zhang and Chen, father and son, once roamed together,
Yet ended as sworn enemies, sharp blades drawn against each other.
Xiao and Cao, lifelong friends in joy and cheer,
Also turned into foes over the slightest sneer.
Friendships forged in the realm of fame and gain,
How can they avoid future sorrow and pain?
On Mount Shang, four elders dwelled in seclusion,
Aged and white-haired, beyond worldly confusion.
They fed on herbs and moss from the rocky vale,
And never blamed each other, through life's long tale.
Not necessarily were they alone in virtue's light,
But they claimed to have no other worldly appetite.
Ancient times praised the difficulty of true bond,
Success or failure hinges on this, as legends respond.
I write this poem to tell like-minded hearts:
To trade friendship for profit is a shame that departs.
