開鑿水井不要害怕挖得太深，
打水的繩索要讓它足夠長。
挖得深，水源才不會枯竭，
從遠處汲水，氣息自然清涼。
這怎能比得上那渾濁的積水，
在道路旁汩汩地流淌？
雖然不需要去遠處尋求，
但喝下它就像飲下滾燙的熱湯。
徒然使四肢生出煩悶疲乏，
昏沉軟弱，不能自強。
鄉野的諺語正合治國之道，
希望您能在朝堂之上，施展抱負。

Dig a well, fear not its depth profound;
Use a long rope to draw water from the ground.
Dig deep, the source will never run dry;
Draw from afar, the air will cool thereby.
How can it compare to muddy water's flow,
That gurgles by the roadside, to and fro?
Though you need not seek far for such a drink,
To drink it is like scalding broth, I think.
It brings but vain fatigue to limbs and heart,
And leaves you weak, unable to play your part.
A rustic saying fits the state's affairs:
I hope you'll serve the court, and lay your plans with cares.
