中古時代風俗醇厚，
田野鄉間多有賢德之人。
長沮和桀溺能識別孔丘的非凡，
江邊的漁父辭別了伍子胥的邀請。
後世風俗大多澆薄，
往往有妖孽禍亂興起。
小的就成為陳勝、吳廣那樣的起義者，
大的就成為王莽、董卓那樣的篡權者。
器物敗壞，蛀蟲就會滋生；
風俗敗壞，奸邪就會產生。
古代的道義日益遙遠，
唉，這真是可悲啊！

In the Middle Ages, customs were pure and sincere,
In fields and villages, many worthy men appeared.
The hermits Jie and Ni recognized Confucius' worth,
The old fisherman declined to serve with Wu Zixu on earth.
In later times, customs grew shallow and mean,
Often, monsters and evils were seen.
In lesser cases, they were like Chen Sheng and Wu Guang,
In greater cases, like Wang Mang or Dong Zhuo, cruel and strong.
When things decay, worms are bred;
When customs decay, traitors are spread.
The ancient Way grows more distant day by day,
Alas! How sorrowful, I must say.
