The world’s ways sink in neglect each day,
At night, my tears in streams silently flow.
A guest asks why I grieve, what wounds I bear:
I mourn the scholar’s spirit, fallen low.
See not the strife in Qi and Lu, so vain,
Where they fight over dregs of wine, for gain.
My lips have long been parched, yet I rejoice
To sing the ‘Hanyi’ poem with clear voice.
If in a land where wine is banned, I’d stay,
What would Cao Cao himself attempt to say?
Once battled fierce at Gaolan’s foot below,
Yet Chibi’s stand could not withstand the foe.
Though it could not hold out, as all men know,
The master pitied it, with tender woe.
Riding a tiger, dare not dismount, I sigh,
A mournful cry but draws a mocking eye.
The court is filled with gentlemen, so grand,
Leaning on noble dukes to hold the land.
Such a fine situation, bright and clear,
All scholars wish to support, hold dear.
But using old Cai to govern the capital,
May overturn Yuanyou’s rule, after all.
Are these words true or false? Let those who see
With discerning minds judge what is to be.
A mute bell hangs in the ancestral shrine,
A dumb tiger crouches by the road’s line.
If these are called true gentlemen, then who
Should bear the name of petty men, ask you?
Currency light, goods leap in painful spree,
The common people’s lives hang by a thread, free.
Yet still they call this the Yuanyou reign—
Heaven above, whom do you hope to feign?
Deep indeed is the grace of rich, clear brew,
But the chance for revenge is perilous too.
Alone I mourn these three hundred years,
What good has come from feeding on such fears?
Banners of salt no longer rise on high,
Men of purpose but grieve with helpless sigh.
