心想可以稍微倚靠枕頭,
童子卻委婉地勸止。
心中懼怕聖賢老師的責備,
擔心美材會化爲朽木。
疲憊不堪無法忍受,
一躺下就立刻熟睡。
是什麼事忽然驚醒了我?
客人到來,理應迅速迎接。
與他交談毫無趣味,
退回來獨自與影子相伴。

尚且依賴有粗糧可食。
硃批墨寫的功課尚未完成,
點校勘誤繼續借著燭光進行。
還要利用夜晚剩餘的時間,
來彌補白天的不足。
年紀已經過了七十,
何必勉強自己努力?
起臥已不能由自己掌控,
爲何不返回空寂的山谷?
The old man has no other delight,
Only in books he still takes pleasure to read.
Moreover, the day is long and bright,
So he unrolls the scroll to proceed.
Reading long, he's weary to the extreme,
Sits upright and closes his eyes in a dream.
Gradually he gathers his spirit within,
Inwardly observes thoughts that begin and end.
Thinking he may lean on the pillow a while,
The lad urges him with a gentle smile.
His heart fears the sage teacher's blame,
Lest fine timber turn to rotten frame.
Fatigue unbearable, he cannot fight,
Once reclined, he falls asleep outright.
What startles him awake so soon?
A guest has come, he must attend ere noon.
Their talk is utterly dull and dry,
He retreats alone, with shadow nigh.

Yet still he has coarse grain to rely.
Red and black inks, work unfinished lies,
Proofreading continues by candlelight's guise.
He'll use the night's remaining hours,
To make up for the day's lost powers.
Past seventy years his life has flown,
Why force himself, to what end is it shown?
Rising and falling are not in his hand,
Why not return to the empty, quiet land?
