行走在萬山之頂，
再也沒有大的陂塘水池。
一條小溪清澈且迅疾，
不時能看見白鷺鷥。
即便有魚也必定不大，
何況可能根本就沒有魚。
蜷縮著一個孤獨的身影，
整日在沙灘邊窺伺。
七澤之地有充足的新鮮食物，
為何不前往那裡謀生？
公子憑臆測回答道：
'羽族有幸生長在此地。
它們的腸胃能裝下多少？
少許食物或許就能免於飢餓。
井中的小魚尚且不顧念江河，
那巨大的王鮪又會思慮什麼？
鸕鷀善於攫取捕捉，
扼住魚喉讓漁夫豐收。
即使貪婪也未必能飽足，
哪比得上保持廉潔自持？

The Mountain Egret
Walking atop ten thousand mountain peaks,
No longer are there vast ponds or great lakes.
A small stream, clear and swiftly flowing by,
Where now and then a white egret I spy.
Any fish there must be none too large,
And furthermore, perhaps there are none at all.
A solitary shadow, coiled in a fist,
All day by the sandy shore, it keeps its tryst.
The seven marshes have fresh food in store,
Why not go there and seek your fortune more?
The young master answers with his own thought,
'The feathered tribe is blessed to be here brought.
How much can their stomach and intestines hold?
A little bit may keep them from the cold.'
The well's minnow heeds not the deep sea's call,
What does the royal sturgeon dream of at all?
The cormorant is skilled at snatching prey,
Choking the throat, it makes fishermen's day.
Though greedy, it may still not have its fill,
How better to be content and hold virtue still?
