Southeast is rich in mountains and in streams;
Majestic aura gathers on Yan's peaks.
The giant spirit pushed the tortoise-stone,
With wondrous force unveiled the primal haze.
Broken cliffs cling to perilous, sheer heights;
Steep walls ascend the cold and empty sky.
Ridges offer ten thousand varied forms,
Each glance reveals a sight unlike the last.
Some layered like brocade with patterned threads,
Some cast as if from ancient, verdant bronze.
Some forward lean like phoenixes in dance,
Some backward draw like wild geese in retreat.
Some crouch like tigers lying still in wait,
Some leap like dragons swimming through the clouds.
Close as brothers speaking face to face,
Ranked as a son before his father, bowed.
Sharp like a brush-tip baring its fine point,
Forked like a blade just split to double edge.
Two pools divide in larger and in small;
Two spirits stand, the west and east apart.
Old sayings barely capture their likeness;
Heaven's craft defies all words and form.
Long buried in the dust of worldly cares,
I'm blessed to rise and feel the winds of heaven.
My eyes and ears are spent in taking in;
My heart is filled with rugged, piled-up thoughts.
A monk, once a Confucian scholar, came,
To join my chase of clouds and distant tracks.
We climbed, not feeling any weariness;
He guided on, the path seemed without end.
How could we part so suddenly, and speak?
I ask, and tears begin to follow down.
For him, the journey's joy had reached its close;
For me, the thought of home grew strong and deep.
To leave, no hasty plans we should devise;
Returning paths again are rushed and brief.
This unfinished bond we yet shall keep,
And meet again, if fate allows, in time.
