沸沸出幽竇，滔滔成巨川。
深流疑徹地，遠勢欲浮天。
萬石攢若鬭，一流瀉如懸。
二蜀通貨博，三峽為防堅。
上下比難險，往來爭泝沿。
衝高濆氣盛，轉急洶形圓。
行人戒仲夏，招子尚耆年。
風波雖滅裂，灘磧且叢駢。
湍聲混蠻市，漲潤入畬田。
旁臨股且慄，順下目無前。
浮沫逢槎聚，垂瀑依岸穿。
哀猿藏森聳，渴鹿聽潺湲。
幽勝祠宇密，傾危村舍聯。
寒沙淹宿雨，暖漵罩春煙。
青蕪隨遠曲，白鳥戲輕漣。
常經祗名利，舊隠多神仙。

發源於岷山一側的細流，
百川朝宗大海本是自然之理。
從幽暗的泉竇中沸騰湧出，
滔滔不絕終成巨大的河川。
深沉的流水彷彿能穿透大地，
遼遠的聲勢幾乎要浮起天空。
萬塊岩石攢聚如同爭鬥，
一道水流傾瀉好似懸空。
它連通二蜀之地，貨殖流通，
三峽又成為堅固的屏障。
上行與下行都無比艱難險峻，
往來船隻爭相溯流或沿流而行。
衝擊高處時噴湧的水汽盛大，
轉折急促處洶湧的形態渾圓。
行旅之人告誡要避開仲夏，
招攬船工尚且要倚重經驗豐富的老人。
風波雖然猛烈暴戾，
險灘與沙石更是叢集密佈。
湍急的水聲混雜著蠻荒集市的人聲，
上漲的潮潤浸入了刀耕火種的畲田。
站在旁邊俯瞰，雙腿戰慄，
順流而下時，目視前方不敢回顧。
浮沫遇到漂木便聚集起來，
垂落的瀑布依傍著崖岸穿流。
哀猿藏身於森然聳立的林木中，
渴鹿聆聽著潺湲的流水聲。
幽靜的勝境中祠宇密集，
傾危的村舍相互連接。
寒冷的沙洲淹留著隔夜的雨，
溫暖的港汊籠罩著春天的煙靄。
青蕪沿著蜿蜒的遠岸生長，
白鳥在輕淺的漣漪間嬉戲。
常經此地的人只為名利，
舊時的隱者多是神仙之流。
至清的水中，泥鰍黃鱔得以逃遁，
極深的淵奧裡，容納著巨大的鱘鰉。
楚國的忠臣（屈原）在此鬱結忠義之氣，
巫山的神女專掌威福之權。
龍驤般的戰船（王濬樓船）裝備敏健，
鯀的兒子大禹疏導洪水的功業周全。
瞿塘峽十里江面幽暗，
灩澦堆只是一座偏處一方的山丘。
砥柱山不足以與之比擬，
呂梁瀑布誠然是虛妄的傳言。
我並非智者，
受命任職只能勤勉努力。
以尺短之才糾察列郡，
乘孤船寸寸前進。
每行一步都用竹篙探路，
每遇百丈激流都需百名縴夫牽引。
整夜只是心神不安，
終日唯有自強不息。
因廢弛職守而罹獲罪網，
只好委付性命於造化的甄別。
寄語那些千金之子：
可曾聽聞狂狷者的言論？
From the side of Min Mountain, a trickle starts its flow,
To pay homage to the sea, its natural course to go.
Bubbling forth from hidden springs, a seething sound it makes,
Swelling to a mighty stream, its vast expanse awakes.
Its deep current seems to pierce the very earth below,
Its far-reaching force aspires to make the heavens glow.
Ten thousand rocks crowd like combatants in a fray,
A single torrent pours as if suspended in its way.
Through two Shu lands, goods and wealth find passage wide,
The Three Gorges stand as barriers, firm and fortified.
Upstream and down compare in hardship and in dread,
Travelers vie against the current, or with it are led.
Striking heights, its spray in furious vigor flies,
Turning swift, its swirling shape a perfect circle tries.
Wayfarers take warning in midsummer's heat,
Boatmen still rely on elders' knowledge, wise and fleet.
Though winds and waves may rage with sudden, violent might,
Rapids and shallows cluster thick, a daunting sight.
The roar of rapids mingles with the barbarous market's din,
The swelling tide invades the fields where slash-and-burn begins.
Standing by the bank, one's legs with trembling shake,
Looking down the stream, the eyes no forward path can take.
Floating foam gathers where the drifting wood is caught,
Falling waterfalls along the cliffside channels wrought.
Mournful gibbons hide within the dense and towering wood,
Thirsty deer attend the murmuring stream's quiet mood.
Secluded shrines and temples stand in close array,
Precarious village huts in linked disarray.
Cold sand is drowned by lingering night-time rain,
Warm inlets veiled in springtime mist's domain.
Green weeds follow the distant river's bend,
White birds sport on light ripples without end.
Often passed through only for fame and gain,
In former times, hermits and immortals would remain.
The clearest waters let the loach and eel escape,
The deepest pools hold sturgeon of colossal shape.
Here Chu's loyal minister nursed his righteous gloom,
Here witch-priestesses wielded power, sealing doom.
Dragon-sterned war-boats showed their agile might,
Gun's successor achieved the guiding task aright.
Qutang Gorge lies in darkness for ten li,
Yanyu Rock stands as a solitary hill.
The River's Pillar cannot with this compare,
The Lüliang Falls are but an empty tale, I swear.
Alas, I am no man of wisdom deep,
By duty bound, I toil with effort steep.
With short foot, I oversee the counties' line,
With inch-like progress, sail this lonely ship of mine.
Each step requires a punt-pole's probing test,
Each hundred fathoms, a hundred men strain at their best.
All night I lie awake with anxious care,
All day I strive with diligence and prayer.
Neglect of duty brings the law's net near,
I trust my fate to Heaven's transforming sphere.
