猴子自顧嬉戲，馬兒自己受驚，
養馬人並不理解猴與馬之間的情狀。
猴子是天性如此，馬兒有什麼罪過？
本意是想防備禍患，卻還是傷害了生命。
不同種類的生物可以相處融洽，也可能互相背離，
同類之間互相傷害，更是難以預料。
志向是馳騁萬里，卻因一次失誤而受困，
吐著豆子，嚼著草根，甘願伏在馬槽邊。

The groom knows not the feelings they hold inside.
The monkey's nature, the horse's innocence—what crime?
To guard against harm, yet life is hurt in time.
Different kinds may suit, yet also drift apart,

A will to run a thousand miles, by one mistake confined,
Spitting beans, gnawing roots, content to stay behind.
