蘇東坡曾在此籌劃歸鄉的行程，
歸來的大雁因而成爲這座亭子的名字。
勁草、剛風與碧綠的苕溪水，
枯水、老雪與青翠的弁山。
披著霜羽的雁羣遠去，客居沙漠，
雲足翩翩，身影掠過洞庭湖。
它們也只是偶然飛來又自行離去，
射鳥的人何必羨慕那高遠莫測的天空。

The immortal of the slope once traced his homeward way here,
Hence the pavilion's named after the returning wild geese.
Sturdy grass, brisk wind, and the green waters of Tiao Stream;
Withered waters, aged snow, and the blue of Bian Mountain.
With frosty wings they journey afar to the desert as guests,
Their cloud-like feet dance lightly, casting shadows on Dongting Lake.
They come by chance and leave again of their own accord,
Why should the fowler yearn for the vast and unseen depths?
