Within the ancestral teaching are two gates, ten perfections and myriad practices are revered.
First called cessation and contemplation to aid new learners, later becoming the root of samadhi and prajna, the Bodhi.
One Dharma, seemingly dual; Dharma-nature serene embodies true cessation, serene yet ever-illuminating, the wondrous root abides.
Samadhi as father, prajna as mother, they can gestate the gateway of a thousand sages.
Increasing root power, nurturing the sage embryo, thought after thought giving birth to Buddhas and patriarchs.
Samadhi as general, prajna as minister, they assist the mind-king to attain the supreme.
Eternally serving as the gate for beings to realize the Way, this is the ancient Buddha's Bodhi model.
Samadhi like the moon, its light makes heretical stars vanish.
It can lift the torch of wisdom, turning clarity, moistening the sprouts of the Way, removing knots of craving.
Prajna like the sun, illuminating and shattering the dark room of ignorance.
It can make heretical views and foolish meditators all become the perfection of wisdom.
Brief silence, momentary stillness, gradually cultivating correct samadhi.
Sages compare efforts, not many are needed, ultimately seeing the wondrous nature of the spiritual terrace.
A glimpse of hearing the Dharma, just passing the ear, can perfume the storehouse consciousness, awakening seeds to arise.
One thought turning the light inward, correct wisdom opens, in an instant becoming Buddha, the Dharma is thus.
The power of meditation, inconceivable, transforms ordinary to sage in that moment.
The root of boundless birth and death is severed, the nest of accumulated kalpas of dust and toil collapses.
Clear mind-water, pure intention-pearl, light swallows all phenomena, shines on a thousand paths.
Prying open one's own eye without flaw or obscuration, the three realms originally have not a single dharma to bind.
The thief of perception and examination, subdued in time; the disease of grasping, suddenly purified.
Washing away the filth of thought, cleansing the dust of delusion, revealing the Dharma-body, firming the life of wisdom.
Like a severed mountain, like a stilled sea, even if heaven and earth turn over, ultimately unchanged.
Luminous like lapis lazuli containing the precious moon, suddenly without reliance and without expectation.
Prajna wisdom, immeasurable, naturally manifests the light of mind everywhere.
Among the gates of myriad practices, it is the foremost guide; in all times, it is called the Dharma King.
Draining the sea of suffering, shattering the mountain of heresy, deluded clouds roll up in an instant.
Gold suddenly appears in the poor woman's room; the pearl secretly returns to the warrior's forehead.
Sever the net of ignorance, cut off the stream of desire, the mighty hero's power is peerless.
It can make iron beds and copper pillars cold, instantly halting demonic enmity and karmic results.
Harmonizing disputes, fulfilling filial piety and righteousness, universally manifesting to beings, surpassing Buddha-wisdom.
Extreme heresies and evil wisdom all pay homage; ants and roc equally receive prediction.
Cultivating only samadhi, pure yang scorches things and hollows out true life.
If correct prajna illuminates dhyana, naturally all dharmas become clear as a mirror.
Cultivating only prajna, pure yang dries things up, leading to stagnation.
One must rely on wondrous samadhi to aid the gate of contemplation, like the moon clear, removing the misty obscuration.
I urge equal study, no biased cultivation; from the start one body, not two heads.
Like a bird's two wings flying in the sky, like a cart's two wheels riding the white ox.
Immediately ascend the shore of awakening on the Brahma path, conveniently sail the boat of compassion on the sea of karma.
Sometimes samadhi on phenomena, controlling it to one place, nothing is not accomplished; sometimes samadhi on principle, just directly observe the mind's nature; sometimes contemplation on phenomena, clarifying all dharmas' characteristics, generating calculations; sometimes contemplation on principle, suddenly realizing there is not one, not that shore.
Samadhi is prajna, not one, not two, not mental calculation; prajna is samadhi, not different, not separate, transcending observation and hearing; sometimes dual practice, serene yet illuminating, penetrating the true teaching; sometimes both extinguished, not samadhi, not prajna, surpassing the usual standard.
One dust enters samadhi, all dusts arise; within the gate of prajna, it becomes the Dharma's naturalness.
When in samadhi within a child's body, an old man's body discusses the true path.
Able to contemplate one realm, ten thousand realms are the same; near dust, far monasteries, none not penetrated.
On the path of Suchness, discussing birth and death; within the sea of ignorance, expounding the perfect teaching.
The eye faculty can perform the Buddha's work of the nose; form dust enters samadhi, scent dust arises.
Mind and realm are often the same, views differ by themselves; who says they don't believe waves are originally water?
Not serene, not illuminating, transcending words and thought; yet serene and illuminating, its merit is incomparable.
Expedient and ultimate, dual practice elucidates the right path; essence and function further aid, containing wondrous meaning.
I urge you all, do not vainly discard; time is like an arrow, like flowing water.
Scatteredness is entirely due to lacking the gate of samadhi; blindness and folly only because of lacking true wisdom.
True words, empty entering the ear; a thousand sutras, ten thousand treatises, all bear the same mark.
The complete merit of samadhi and prajna not forgotten for a moment, one thought suddenly returns to the true awakened ground.
Samadhi must be practiced, prajna must be heard; do not let the spiritual terrace have a single speck of darkness.
A tree that fills the arms grows from a tiny sprout; accumulated gradual effort becomes the precious honored one.
A monkey learning samadhi is born in the heavenly realm; a woman with talent and thought enters the gate of the Way.
Benefiting self and others, cause and effect complete; if one removes samadhi and prajna, nothing can be discussed.
