Briefly clarifying the names and differences of the enlightened ground,
Rising and returning, beginning and end, mutually exchange and arise.
The ocean of nature first establishes and adds names and titles,
Subtle enlightenment still relies on the enlightenment of nature.
Embodied enlightenment and nature both contain the subtle and bright,
Bright enlightenment and subtle enlightenment proceed in tandem.
Subtle enlightenment enlightens the subtle, the originally bright substance,
Completely becomes the one true essence without leakage.
Bright enlightenment enlightens brightness, understanding what is understood,
Yet sometimes, by grasping appearances, the original brightness is lost.
The bright and subtle two enlightenments determine the fundamental substance,
Embodied enlightenment and nature enlightenment are both bright.
The serene enlightenment is perfectly round without increase or decrease,
Herein there is no Buddha and no sentient beings.
Not enlightened from start to finish is not true clarity,
Not hearing delusion and enlightenment, how can there be awareness?
This is called the Tathagata-garbha of the mind-ground,
Also without enlightened illumination and without birth.
Neither born nor extinguished, the sea of Suchness,
Serenely abiding eternally, named the nameless.
The great void, not yet enlightened, gives rise to specks of rosy clouds,
How can one hear the sound of leakage in a mote of dust?
Bubbles in emptiness are not apart from the sea of enlightenment,
Movement and stillness are originally the one true brightness.
The enlightened-bright substance inherently contains spiritual flames,
Enlightened-brightness chasing flames leads to waxing and waning.
Missing it and not returning is called 'no enlightenment',
Meeting it and returning to the source is the arising of initial enlightenment.
Fundamental enlightenment arises due to initial enlightenment,
Right enlightenment still relies on merging with enlightenment's brightness.
Due to these two kinds, differences and interchanges are formed,
Thus causing confusion, creating names of dependence and deviance.
Fully containing the dual paths of defilement and purity,
Where enlightened-brightness is contained, different paths sprout.
Nature arising, unborn, unmoving wisdom,
Not apart from the enlightened substance, originally perfect.
Nature arising, turning enlightenment, flips into a realm of birth,
Thus causing the leaking to fall into deluded blindness.
Ignorance, because of craving, mutually nourishes,
Name-and-form, the root, sequentially arise.
The seventh consciousness, turning, is veiled by the round mirror,
The fifth and sixth, when arising, obscure enlightened brightness.
Contact, feeling, grasping, arise dependently,
Birth, aging, sickness, death continue in succession.
Karmic consciousness, vast and boundless, sinks in the sea of suffering,
Following the torrent, mighty and vast, chasing drifting and falling.
The great sage, compassionate, raises aid and relief,
From the use of one sound, three sounds emerge.
The wisdom-body arises from the dharma-body,
The practice-body is still contracted from the wisdom-body.
Wisdom and practice two bodies merge without duality,
Returning to the one substance, originally level.
All phenomena equally contain the true sea-seal,
One mind universally manifests total perfect brightness.
Serene light, flaming flames, on what do they rest?
Empty nature, vast and expansive, has nowhere to abide.
Everywhere manifesting birth without the mark of birth,
Everywhere manifesting extinction without the form of extinction.
Pearl-mirror instantly reflects without coming or going,
Floating clouds gather and scatter, no constant course.
Appearing and disappearing, following truth, like water and moon,
Responding to conditions like an echo, transforming the sentiments of the multitude.
The sentient beings' nature-ground originally undefiled,
Only because floating delusions obscure the true essence.
Not understanding the five aggregates are like an empty gathering,
How to know the four elements are like a mirage city?
The mountain of self-conceit and ignorance stands lofty and towering,
The sea of ignorance and desire, deep and vast, murky and dark.
Often pursuing companions of flattery and deceit,
Constantly following fierce beasts, making mournful cries.
One's own nature turning consciousness becomes illusion,
One's own mind's illusory realm startles one's own mind.
Understanding this illusory nature is like a shimmering heat haze,
Empty flowers, waves of consciousness, again become perfectly accomplished.
The great void suddenly feels the floating clouds scatter,
Then one realizes the void is originally pure itself.
Past and present, serenely, constantly clear and luminous,
Cannot be grasped by names of past/present, ordinary/sage.
