南山上有一只玄豹，
可以七天不下山觅食。
它想让雨露润泽自己，保持毛皮的洁净，
成就那华美斑斓的文采装饰。
皮毛长成了，却会成为自身的灾祸，
不如生长出翅膀。
只愁翅膀长成之后，
又会遭到罗网和箭矢的伤害。

On the southern mountain dwells a mystic leopard black,
For seven days it will not come down to take a snack.
It longs for pure rain and dew to cleanse its coat so fine,
To make its patterned fur a glorious, shining sign.
But once the hide is perfect, disaster it will bring,
Better to grow a pair of wings and take to wing.
Yet I fear when the wings are grown and full and fleet,
Once more 'twill meet with snares and arrows, a bitter feat.
