Were it not for the purely filial soul,
How could this ancient temple stand, serene and whole?
Wall colors traced by snails in wandering lines,
Incense ash disturbed by rats' faint, scattered signs.
The bell's voice, hoarse, seems to pierce the wooden frame;
Banner shadows flicker on the perilous pole, aflame.
Still fearing winter might bring forth bamboo shoots anew,
From time to time, I come to gaze beyond the bamboo.
