A Zen monk came to visit late, looking ancient and forlorn.
He spoke of nature and emptiness, his mind carving, painfully groping.
On a thousand classic cases, he could expound without a single flaw.
A cicada chirped outside the window, engaging the monk in free exchange.
The monk shouted, but the cicada knew not; the monk raged, but the cicada felt not.
The cicada, weary, suddenly flew away, leaving the monk's words with nowhere to land.
I called my child to close the wooden gate, bade the monk to take his staff and go.
