The louse's form is but a tiny speck of hemp or millet grain,
Yet its venom far surpasses the cruel stab of blade or pain.
Upwards, through the hair and temples, it threads dark pearls in a line,
Downwards, in the folds of garments, it hides like jade rice, a sign.
Calling friends and leading kindred, they run rampant, bold and free,
Shaking heads and lifting feet, they feast and dine with glee.
By the bright window at dawn, I search and shift my seat in vain,
On the rainy bed at night, I scratch, no peace on quilt I gain.
Urgently I call the lad to bring hot water for a bath,
They dart and flee in panic, as if fleeing from a wrath.
The lad, with furrowed brow, pleads mercy on their behalf,
I scold and warn them sternly, hoping they'll not dare to laugh.
Yet I recall that in the past, in the Hall of Brilliant Light,
They roamed the minister's beard, by the imperial gaze held tight.
