The blazing heat extends for thirty thousand miles,
As if we all were boiled in one vast pot.
My thatched hut with its few rafters and tiles,
Where can a place of coolness here be sought?
Only by sitting still, with heart held tight,
Can I rest in this true place of the Way.
In emptiness, not a single thing in sight,
The scorching flames cannot me harm or slay.
Since I have known the joy this practice brings,
My two feet have not stepped outside the hall.
People all laugh at my clumsy doings,
I also laugh at their mad rush and sprawl.
