斜阳挂在庭院的树上，
有蝉在树梢鸣叫响亮。
无缘无故地聒噪人耳，
惊扰了我在闲窗下的安眠。
我观察动物之中，
最为高洁的莫过于蝉。
它轻盈地蜕去污浊的外壳，
饱餐清风寒露，以此为生。
除此之外一无所求，
又何苦徒然地喧闹不休？
伶牙俐齿只会屡屡招人厌恶，
不如暂且忘却言语，保持静默。

The slanting sun hangs on the courtyard tree,
A cicada chirps atop it, wild and free.
For no reason it clamors in my ear,
Startling me from sleep by the window, clear.
Among all creatures I observe and know,
None is purer than the cicada's glow.
Elegantly it sheds its filthy shell,
Feasting on wind and dew, in cold it dwell.
Beyond this, it seeks nothing at all,
Why then make such a noisy, vain call?
A glib tongue only earns repeated spite,
Better to forget words and be quiet.
