而馀耳之交不过是表面朋党。
世间的道路比山岭还要险峻崎岖，
人与人的交情淡薄得如同寒冰。
赠送绨袍已非旧日情谊的眷恋，
何况是同朝为官、一起受职的情形呢？
也不要因此去责备他人，
恐怕我自己也未能做到先施恩惠于人。

Fan and Zhang pledged their hearts in friendship true,
But Yu and Er were friends in face alone.
The world's path is more treacherous than a mountain pass;
The bonds of friendship are as thin as ice.
The silk robe gift is not the old affection's token;
How much less when both donned official sashes together?
Do not blame others for this state of affairs,
For I myself fear I have failed to give first.
