The silver fish is silver-bright,
The bamboo fish is bamboo-green.
A thousand acres of Wei River's grace, so lovely to hold,
All dyed into a single suit of green.
The fish lives in the bamboo stream,
Its home is 'midst the bamboo roots, with water chestnuts and weeds.
By day it feeds on bamboo leaves and bamboo seeds,
By night it drinks bamboo dew and breathes the bamboo breeze.
Its former life was Wang Ziyou,
Its present form, the Red-Carp Lord.
Only knowing love for bamboo, it gave its life away,
Transformed into this gentleman's frosty, verdant array.
An old fisherman lodges by the bamboo stream at night,
The fish, alarmed, shrink beneath the ice, away from the fishing line's plight.
At dawn, he catches a piece of watery, pale jade—
The master smiles and pats his belly, fed on goosefoot and amaranth, unafraid.
