破坏了蔬菜中最丰美的部分,
都是因为烟熏火燎的缘故。
霜打的根、雪覆的叶,切成细丝送来,
瓷瓶傍晚封好早晨就打开。
贵人我知道没有官派模样,
肉食者我知道没有清瘦骨相。
只该在南溪边嚼着菜根,
一杯酒径直醉倒在溪中云影里。

Snow-white radish, yet not a radish true;
When eaten, it's a spicy piece of jade to chew.
Flowered-leaf turnip, yet not a turnip kind;
When eaten, it's a sweet and icy rind.
The cooks in three halls pass down their food records with care,
But this wild man's veggie lore is beyond their share.
Use vinegar, but not for sourness alone;
Use salt, but not for saltiness to be known.
Beyond the salt and vinegar lies a flavor rare,
With ginger sprouts and citron peel still blended there.
It's not steamed in a pot, nor boiled in a pan;
Neither by steaming nor by boiling it's a plan.
The finest essence of the greens is all undone,
All due to the smoky fire under the sun.
Frosty roots and snowy leaves, finely shredded, come;
In porcelain jars, covered at dusk, opened at morn's hum.
Noblemen, I know, lack an official air;
Meat-eaters, I know, lack a bony frame to bear.
I'm only fit to chew veggie roots by the southern stream,
And get drunk straight with a cup, amid the clouds that gleam.
