春秋冬夏,风雨霜露,无不是教化;
How great are the words of Confucius the Sage!
Joy and sorrow arise unseen, intertwined,
Yet straining to hear, their sound cannot be found.
Not seeing is the true sight,
Not hearing is the true sound.
Though Zixia said he dared not but receive,
In truth he failed, ending in confusion deep,
Mistaking his disciple for the Way to keep.
Though Zengzi's awakening was small,
He grasped the Sage's brilliance, luminous and tall.
Washing, drying, awakening—loss may befall,
Yet in washing and drying, wonder lies in all.
Zisi and Mencius came near, it's true,
But alas, small awakening led to errors new,
Their words often harmed the Way, through and through.
Their fame filled the world, far and wide,
Yet those pointing out their faults were few beside,
How long will later learners be misled, in this tide?
If only the court upheld the Sage's word alone,
And cut all heterodox views, making the Great Way known.
In ten or twenty years, awakeners slowly increase,
Nearly two hundred—is this Heaven's release?
Spring, autumn, winter, summer, wind, rain, frost, dew—all are teaching,
Thunder, lightning, flowing forms, creatures moist with dew—all are teaching.
The noble man need not speak with others to share,
Even in the fields, silent, he becomes a Sage—no other art to compare.
How great are the ultimate words of Confucius the Sage!
How can we repay his boundless virtue, age after age?
