Beyond the river, by the creek, the mandarin ducks reside,

Their hearts, though miles apart, in longing are allied.

Upon the foamy waves, their iridescent hues now ride,

Through misty rain, their dulcet calls they cannot hide.

The riverbank, with knotweed bright, in vain does beauty show,

Where in the lotus pond to seek them, who can know?

Who colored these lovebirds, with such a vivid glow?

How many golden needles were wasted, sewing to and fro?
