定嫌昔日徐庾体,渴骥奔泉超法律。
骐骥骅骝志千里,屹立天闲甘伏枥。
气势相宜适操纵,肉骨兼匀称肥瘠。
世人但以骊黄求,翠驳玉花烦剪剔。
苦论右军爱鹅趣,知公爱马应成癖。
山阴道士不换经,已悟黄庭养生术。
持将此卷参马祖,待须一口西江吸。

骏马良驹都怀有千里之志,
却安然屹立于天厩,甘愿伏于槽枥。
气势与形态相得益彰,适宜驾驭,
肌肉与骨骼匀称协调,不胖不瘦。
世人只从毛色是黑是黄来评判,
还为青白杂毛的骏马烦劳修剪。
若论王羲之爱鹅的雅趣,
便知韩公爱马已成痴癖。
山阴道士不肯用《道德经》换鹅,
是因他已领悟《黄庭经》的养生之术。
持此画卷去参拜马祖禅师,
等待时机,一口吸尽西江水。
Han's painting of horses is hailed as a divine brush,
Their raised heads, proud and lofty, make mountain spirits weep.
My eyes now bright, beholding this watering steeds' scene,
I know the bounds of rule and measure cannot be overstepped.
Surely he disdained the old Xu-Yu style of verse,
Like a thirsty steed dashing to a spring, surpassing all laws.
Fine steeds and noble coursers aspire for a thousand miles,
Yet stand content in heaven's stable, willing to bear the trough.
Their spirit and form in harmony, fit for command,
Flesh and bone well-proportioned, neither too fat nor lean.
The world judges merely by coat color, black or yellow,
Trimming jade-flower steeds, troubling over dappled grays.
If we speak of Wang Xizhi's fondness for geese,
Then surely this master's love for horses is a deep obsession.
The Taoist of Shanyin would not trade his scripture,
Having grasped the Yellow Court's art of nurturing life.
Take this scroll to consult the Patriarch of Horses,
Await the moment to swallow the West River in one gulp.
