众多马蹄踏过空寂的山峦，
半夜声响如同风雨骤至。
天亮时赶到那个地方，
他们早已回到天上去了。
只有我被大义所迫，留在这里，
怎能避免以我的名字被追捕？
蜗牛蜷缩进寒冷的壳中，
这难道能说是安身之处吗？
我脱身投入浩瀚的天地，
本就有神灵在暗中护佑。
礼法说不能与仇敌共戴天，
上天知晓，上天也允许如此。

A herd of hooves tramples the empty hills at night,
Like a sudden storm of wind and rain in the midnight.
At dawn I reach the very ground they trod,
But they have vanished, back to heaven, to their god.
Only I, bound by a greater righteousness, remain,
How could I escape the capture by my name?
A snail retreats into its chilly shell—
Could this be called a place of peace to dwell?
I break free, plunging into the vast and deep,
Surely some divine force my vigil keeps.
Rites say one cannot share the sky with a foe,
Heaven knows, and heaven allows it to be so.
