地位高的客人要接待,地位低的客人也要接待。
大儿子稳重乖巧,善于递送茶水;
小儿子脚步踉跄,但也能作揖行礼。
家里的人不用剪掉发髻(去卖钱),
我典当了珍藏的唐书来置办酒食。
唐书典当了以后还可以赎回来,
可如果宾客不来往,门庭就会显得庸俗冷落。
Receive the guest, receive the guest!
The high I'll receive, and the low I'll receive.
The elder son is steady, adept at serving tea with zest;
The younger son, though stumbling, can make a bow, I believe.
My family need not cut their cloud-like hair for money's quest,
I pawn my Tang dynasty books to furnish the feast.
The Tang books pawned can still be redeemed, at best,
But if guests don't come, my household sinks in vulgarity, depressed.
