Woodpecker, pecking wood again and again,
How venomous is your pecking, I ask in pain.
Thousands of pines, tall and straight, stand in grace,
In May and June, they welcome the wind's embrace.
What harm has the wood done to you, I implore,
That you peck from dawn till dusk, forevermore?
I urge you to halt your sharp beak's cruel attack,
To wound the tree's life, my heart cannot bear the rack—
For already, an archer waits in the pavilion at the back.
A tiny insect, what does it truly know?
Yet it can answer with a heartfelt thought, even so.
The Son of Heaven loves his people, his care is deep,
Dressing at dawn, he worries about their food and sleep.
Years of crop failure have brought famine's cruel reign,
In poor lanes, faces pale with hunger and strain.
County officials press for taxes, urgent and severe,
Greedy clerks demand bribes, exploiting fear.
Pecking wood compared to carving wood, which is the greater blight?
The life of trees and the people's plight—
Which one deserves our pity, our protective might?
What should be censured is left untouched, a wrong to see.
For my sake, tell that archer to let the woodpecker be.
