适应时势本非我的打算，
接触世俗反而更加懒散。
身外之物终究不会到来，
何必过问是否有客人经过。

All things outside the gate are not as they were;
I'd rather sit behind closed doors, alone and still.
Long have I kept away from kin and friends so dear,
Cut off from all the world's congratulations or condolences.
To suit the times was never part of my design;
To mingle with the vulgar only makes me more inert.
External things will never come as I desire—
Why bother asking if a visitor has passed?
