By the river north, I received the imperial decree,
To move my post to the distant southern shore.
First I inquired about the ban on private tea,
Then asked of the poll tax on every man.
The tax on each head is trivial, a mere four hundred,
But the profit from tea is tenfold higher.
Only death or conscription into the army,
Removes a name from the county's household roll.
If one picks tea leaves not for the state,
The government surely will charge him with crime.
Why, in this age of supposed peace and prosperity,
Do the common people still lack ease and comfort?
Why do those in power and high position,
Promote profit yet fail to root out harm?
I wish to resign from office and return home,
To plead before the Emperor's countenance.
If one word of mine can irrigate his heart,
The shower of his grace will surely pour down.
