被擒而不受辱,古时也有这样的人;
The ancient stele, worn and broken, cannot be read,
Yet distant folk, who cherish it, would not grind it smooth.
Tradition says it was Lord Yan, the governor,
Whose carved stone, after a thousand years, now bears blurred words.
Of Yan Yan's life, I do not recall the tale,
Save that when the city fell, his resolve stood highest.
Captured yet unbowed—such men existed in antiquity;
I admire how he broke the pride of Zhang Fei, the bold.
Life or death in the army—what is there to wonder?
Riding victory's tide with fervor—what else could one do?
Beheading comes slow—do not rage, my son,
Am I one to fear death like mere children?
A common man facing execution may not flinch,
What he values is a spirit vast enough to swallow the Yellow River.
In mortal peril, such calm and leisure he possessed—
Gazing at this stele, stirred with passion, I think of wielding spears.
