春日湖边的柳树泛着鹅黄色，
隔年的莲藕还冻得僵硬。
翻动池沼，藕节如龙蛇般蠕动，
撑船采挖，藕茎似象牙犄角般修长。
用清泉洗去淤泥与杂质，
洁白的藕段仿佛咬碎了冰霜。
请不要把新生的藕梢都采尽，
待到炎夏，才能有荷叶如翠盖送来清凉。

The old lotus roots, frozen, still lie stiff and numb.
Like dragons and snakes they writhe when the pond is turned anew,
Like tusks and horns they lengthen as boats through the muck do plumb.
Bathed in clear spring, they shed the clinging mud and grime,
Their pearly segments shatter frost and ice in time.
Oh, spare the tender shoots, let them not all be claimed,
Lest summer winds find the green canopy disclaimed.
