虎豹的本性是要吃人,
智慧的人却豢养它们以供娱乐。
形体和影子本是相互亲近的,
愚昧的人看见它们却感到害怕。
他们怀疑相同的事物,却不怀疑相异的事物,
愚昧与智慧之间的差距是多么遥远啊!
Tigers and leopards by nature prey on men,
Yet the wise keep them tamed for their delight.
Form and shadow are kin since time began,
But fools, beholding them, take to their heels in fright.
They doubt what's akin, not what's strange and apart—
How far apart are folly and wisdom's art!
