回信时我自称如牛马般奔走效劳的人，
占卜时我是草野茅舍中的平民。
早已愧对（自己不是）屈曲硕大的栋梁之材，
羞于谈及金钱这等阿堵物。
触到笼子，强劲的翅膀被摧折；
吐着沫子，是困窘的鱼在浅滩。
尚且还想求得些学问的糟粕，
心里明白自己已是斫轮老手，深知其道。

In reply, I write as your humble steed,
Divining with grass, a thatched cottage man.
Long have I shunned the vessel's noble breed,
Ashamed to speak of wealth, as others can.
My strong wings, against the cage, are broken;
In spit and foam, the stranded fish lies bare.
Yet still I seek the dregs, a humble token,
Knowing my skill in carving grows with care.
