The Zen master, eighty, with hair frost-white,
Sits cold by the cloud-side in his old bamboo abode.
He only lets this body in long indolence reside,
With nothing else remaining to occupy his mind.
The flying stream strikes rocks, scattering pearl-like spray,
The slanting sun enters the woods, stretching pine shadows long.
Composing verse from the scene, he doubts its worth and sway,
Seeks out a woodcutter father to judge right from wrong.
