你我的身世境遇并不相同，
我独自隐居在南山云雾之中。
忽然收到故人的问候，
原来是巴陵的县令您。
您治理政务最为潇洒超脱，
洞庭湖的政声天下闻名。
您才高而有闲暇，
那壮观的景象谁能与您同赏？
您像子贱治单父不靠弹琴，
又如河阳令潘岳工于文辞。
您寄来大轴，写满佳句，
如琼花般美好，散发着兰草的芬芳。
赠诗给我岂会没有深意，
但我已衰老，何足挂齿。
反复诵读却不知如何报答，
只能怅然遥望长江之滨。

Our life paths are not the same;
I dwell alone by South Mountain clouds.
Suddenly I receive a letter from an old friend—
It turns out to be the Magistrate of Baling.
Your governance is most free and untrammeled,
Your fame at Dongting is known throughout the land.
With your great talent, you have leisure to spare;
Such magnificent sights, who can match your company?
Like Zijian who did not need to play the zither,
Or the magistrate of Heyang skilled in letters.
You sent me a grand scroll with beautiful lines,
Like jade blossoms imbued with orchid's fragrance.
This gift to me is surely not without intent,
But in my decline, what am I worth?
I read it thrice, yet know not how to repay,
And gaze wistfully at the Yangtze's boundless shore.
