Lü Wang, not a bear, but a sage foretold.
Who would have thought, the Earl and the Grand Duke would meet?
For a thousand years, such an encounter is rare.
Had the Earl gone hunting early in the morn,
The Duke was but hurriedly buying wine in town.
Had the Earl gone hunting late and slow,
The Duke's bones would lie east of the Eastern Sea below.
Aged and frail, with missing teeth and balding head.
Who knew the strategies hidden in his breast?
Who knew his feats of war and conquest?
Meeting with a smile among the reed flowers fair,
Before words were spoken, hearts understood, pure and clear.
Longing for my white-haired elder, my gaze does strain,
My cart rumbles on, I wish you were with me again.
Why not return and help build my domain?
You should also pity the plight of mortal men,
With a stroke of your frosty beard, you consent to follow then.
The trees at Biying mourn in my wind's sigh,
Alas, past events vanish like wild geese in the sky.
The universe drifts, endless and vast,
Waves surge and roar, troubling the void at last.
How many idle heroes by the gulls' side rest,
With sallow faces, they write books or fish at sunset's behest.
At midnight, dreaming, I rise to pound the dragon's crest,
Do I not wish to go where mists are thick and pressed?
The western hills cut off the sun, no trace of its quest.
The Earl's coming is the people's fortune and grace,
If the Earl comes not, why does the Duke weep in this place?
The perch grows fat, the water shield finds its place.
