Who cut the beard of the azure dragon,
And planted it by the stone by the water's edge?
It does not vie with grasses for the spring's favor,
But stands in secluded green through all four seasons.
My heart, in quiet contemplation,
Adores this upright hue.
One morning, I moved its fragrant root,
And with my own hands planted it in an ancient porcelain pot.
I let the cool breeze sift through it,
And bathed it with sweet dew.
With this companion for my idle self,
How could I cherish common flowers?
I call the boy to sweep the clean room,
And place it beside the orchids and fragrant thoroughworts.
Like meeting a man beyond worldly things,
All thoughts of gain and fame are released.
Like befriending an immortal in poetry,
Our tastes for serenity and detachment find harmony.
Man and things are originally one body,
Yet purity and turbidity are as far apart as sky and earth.
Things gather by their kind,
And men, in friendship, must choose wisely.
Man is the soul of all things,
How could he lack true discernment?
